Imelda, a dedicated and long-term volunteer in the Westmead Medical Research Foundation office, knows all too well what it's like to rely on the efforts of medical researchers and carers.
Imelda was a registered nurse and her husband, a cancer patient, was referred to specialists at Westmead Hospital. Impressed with the level of care and the innovative research carried out at Westmead, Imelda directed donations in memory of her husband to the Foundation, and joined the team as a regular volunteer in 2006.
"Sometimes when I go in to help out, general office work, the team will say, 'It's great to see you. We have so much to do!'" Imelda says. "It's wonderful to be able to see what a difference volunteering makes, and to also meet some of the researchers, who are working in such diverse fields as Alzheimer's, cancer and cystic fibrosis.
"Volunteering with Westmead Medical Research Foundation gives me a great deal of satisfaction, and I've been able to get to know a mighty fine group of people.
"I've enjoyed every minute of my volunteer work, and count it as a great privilege to be connected with so many people who are doing so much good."
