UTILITIES BILL - $150

When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the impact on their family stretches well beyond the emotional pain. It can be financially devastating to lose the income of this parent, even without the added burden of illness.

This gift will help pay urgent bills for a cancer patient with dependent children.

Once your gift is received, we can get a cheque to families that desperately need it within 24 hours.

(In the event that this gift is overstocked or no longer needed, we will use your gift to purchase something of equal value and usefulness, to the same people.)

Geraldine's gift

The Geraldine Fund, supported by Westmead Medical Research Foundation, was established in 1999 to celebrate the life of a young woman who was a patient at Westmead Hospital's Oncology Department.

It provides critical support to families in need, including paying electricity bills, phone bills, school fees and medical costs.

One 36 year old mother had an autistic child attending a special school, costing her $700 a term. When she developed breast cancer, her self-employed husband had to stop work to care for her. The Geraldine Fund eased their financial stress, helping with outstanding school fees and utility costs.

"We can get a cheque to families within 24 hours," says Tina Cunningham, executive assistant to the Fund's co-trustee Professor Rick Kefford. "No other organisation can provide this immediate relief."

Tina says families couldn't be more grateful for the support.

"These families are grief-stricken by the news of cancer, compounded by their financial situation. Psychologically they are at the end of their tether. The Fund gives them that glimmer of hope."
