This St Patrick's Day, Run 4 Jess

March 8th, 2018

For six consecutive years Steve Clark with the assistance of his mother Lynette Clark, have generously dedicated their time in organising a fun run in memory of Steve’s wife, Jess Clark, who passed away in early 2013. The aim of the ‘Run 4 Jess’ initiative is to raise funds for Westmead Medical Research Foundation (WMRF) in support of Westmead Hospital C5c Oncology ward.

Holding the annual “Run 4 Jess” is such a generous way to give back to Westmead Hospital and when we asked Steve and Lynette why they decided to hold the event, they said that after Jess passed away, they encouraged family and friends to make a donation to the C5c ward rather than send flowers. Then, Girraween Athletics Club kindly offered to hold a fun run to help raise even more funds for this valuable cause.

I thought this was a great idea because it served as a way to bring together a large group of people who loved and valued Jess, as well as to raise money for something that was such a big part of the last part of her life. Since then it has served a dual purpose of being both a ‘competitive’ fun run and a chance for friends and family of Jess to come together and honour her memory through raising money,” Steve said.

Steve is grateful for the support of doctors and nurses who dedicate a huge portion of their life helping patients and families when they need it most.

The C5c unit is made of some of the most incredible humans you could meet. When Jess was staying at Westmead, the C5c unit was like family. They were truly invested in her journey, not simply passive observers. The C5c unit celebrated her successes with her and mourned with us when we lost her. It meant the world to me that I could drop her off at the hospital and know that she was with her ‘second family’.”

For Steve and Lynette, raising money for WMRF is the opportunity to help despite “feeling helpless”. “Not all of us have the skills, bravery and tenacity required to be doctors, nurses and scientists. Fundraising gives us all a chance to support these valuable members of our community by giving them the resources they need to better help others,” Steve said.

Participants of all ages are invited to take part in the 6th Run 4 Jess which will take place on Saturday 17th March, at the Gipps Road Sporting Complex, Greystanes from 2pm. Don’t forget to wear green – as this was Jess’ favourite colour and in theme with St Patrick’s day!
